National Event News (June 2023)

NSL- West 2023 Is In The Books

Hosted by San Luis Valley Rocketeers (SLVR) #774

Event Director Matt Abbey and members of the San Luis Valley Rocketeers of Alamosa, CO just finished hosting NSL- West 2023 and what a weekend it was. 446 flights were made from A to O impulse. Though we were blown out for the last third of Saturday, all day Sunday and most of Monday we enjoyed terrific weather with very light winds. Sunday’s weather in particular was so good we saw 246 flights. The prepared L3 flyers put the 52k foot waiver to good use with fifteen flights of L class or greater.

Enough can’t be said about how awesome this launch site is and how prepared Matt’s crew was to run what a very efficient launch. There was never a noticeable back-up at check-in and pad assignment. Left and right side ranges were spaced to allow for racking and launching at the same time.

Wide open, flat, and with low ground cover and no spiny plants for miles! Matt and his crew successfully acquired a waiver to 52,000 feet and it was well used. LOTS of M’s, a few N’s and even an O was flown.

And the local 4H group kept everyone fed and watered. The Frito Pie was the bomb!

There were FOURTEEN on-site vendors and Chris’ Rockets was there sporting a new 40 foot trailer that was akin to a WalMart Supercenter for rocket motors, kits, and materials.

Thanks to: AeroTech-Quest, Estes, Moto-Joe, HobbyTown USA, LOC Precision, Spherachutes, Front Range Rocketry, Mile High Rocketry, Blanca Shirt Company, Madcow Rocketry, NOVA Rocketry, and the Model Rocket Guy for their tremendous support.

Fliers did a great job volunteering to staff the range for one or more shift. A big shout out to Steve Lubliner who served as the lead on Safety Check the entire weekend.

There was a terrific rocketeers social at the Colorado Farm Brewery!

NSL West 2024 will be returning to Alamosa next year in early June. Plan to be there!
