Competition Meets

Since the first NAR Annual Meet (NARAM) was held in 1959, tens of thousands of modelers have participated in NAR sanctioned competition.

Tom Pastrick and his BOMARC NAR Meets are gathering places where people meet to engage in friendly competition in a relaxed, social setting. Your fellow sparring partners are also your friends -- people from the same NAR section or someone who lives in another part of the country. Striving to achieve a 100% success-rate while pushing the performance envelope can be more fun when you can share your triumphs and failures with others.

NAR meets feature about 4-8 different flying events. More events are held at the yearly NARAM. Contestants who make successful, qualified flights at an NAR meet earn competition points. The first four places in each event earn more points, with first place receiving the most points. Difficult events earn more potential points than easier events. Competition points are also scaled by what kind of meet is being conducted.

Hard Core Competitors

Larger, regional meets have more potential points available than smaller, local area meets. NAR members can also pool their points together to earn competition points for their NAR section. Whole sections can work together as a team toward the goal of winning the National Championship. In order to earn National standing, the individual must demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in many different events.

The NAR Contest Board sanctions competition meets at six levels:

Record Trials

Open to any NAR member. Any number or combination of events may be flown. Members get together to attempt new U.S. Model Rocket Performance Records . No competiton points are awarded.

Section

Open to the members of a single NAR Section, and their guests.

Local

Open to two or more NAR Sections, or to any NAR member within a predetermined geographical area.

Open

Similar to Local meets, but must draw a minimum of 5 contestants.

Regional

Open to all NAR members in two or more states, or from locations at least 50 miles from the site of the meet. Regional meets must draw a minimum of 10 contestants.

National

Open to all NAR members. Held annually, in a different area of the country each year.

Meets are typically hosted by an NAR section, but individuals may also host Local, Open, and Regional meets. The NAR can provide you with all the materials you need to sanction and run a first-class rocket competition.
