A Message from the NAR President

Greetings!

I value your suggestions on what we should do as an organization in the future and I value your feedback on how we are doing in the present.  If you would like a good status report on how things are currently going in the NAR, read the minutes we just posted on the NAR website from the July 28 Board of Trustees meeting.

I particularly want to collect both feedback and suggestions widely and systematically here at the beginning of my tenure as NAR President.  Please help me by spending a few minutes taking a new online survey on how we are doing and what is important to you. I would like to get over 1000 NAR members taking this survey by November 1 and so far only 300 have done so.  The survey is at:   http://www.nar.org/membersurvey .

Be safe, have fun, and pay forward.

TARC 2008

The NAR and our partners at the Aerospace Industries Association announced the opening of registration for the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) for 2009 on September 3.  This begins the seventh year of the NAR's most successful "pay forward" outreach program.  Registration information is at the event website www.rocketcontest.org, and there is more information on TARC on the NAR website's Team America page, including publicity handouts to use in recruiting student teams.

Please help "launch" some 7th through 12th grade students' interest in rocketry as a hobby and in aerospace as a career by telling them about this competition, by encouraging them to enter a team in it (3 to 10 students), and/or by mentoring a team that needs an experienced adult rocketeer to help them learn the basics of safe rocketry.  The event offers $60,000 in prizes to the top national winners, and a free trip for the first-place team to the Paris Air Show.

Contact president@nar.org to volunteer as a NAR TARC mentor.
Alway Prizes and Grants for Juniors

Long-time NAR member Robert Alway knows what it means to "pay forward".  Over the last several years he has donated $20,000 to the NAR to fund cash prizes of $1000 (1st place) through $200 (4th) for the "B" Division (age 14-18) winners of the Research and Development compeition at each year's NARAM.  This year he also provided $2000 of this prize money to fund the travel for 3 young NAR B Divisioners to their first-ever NARAM, where they were required in return to fly in a couple of competition events and to do a presentation on some achievement or project in rocketry.

This generous support has really revived interest in rocketry research and competition among young people on the verge of making college and career decisions.  This is exactly what Bob intended, and it's working.  In recognition of his generosity, the NAR Board has awarded Bob a Life Membership in the NAR.  Thanks, Bob Alway!
Rocket Range Safety

One of the most frequent and dangerous mishaps on rocket ranges is a grass fire.  A grass fire can spread rapidly and cause significant damage if you do not respond rapidly and correctly.  What can you do to prevent or appropriately respond to this safety risk?

First, clear all dry grass from anywhere near the launch pads where rocket motor exhaust particles could reach the ground, and put fire-resistant blankets (Nomex or heavy fiberglass welders' cloths) over places you cannot clear.  And have someone watching the pad area after each flight and not the rocket.

Second, have fire extinguishing equipment close by the pads and ready to use.  Water is the best agent to use, and pressurized extinguishers or hand-pump "indian pumps" are the best way to apply it -- spraying or splashing it at the base of the fire, not dumping it.  Have a rake, shovel, or beater as well -- these are much better than sneakers!  Fight the fire from upwind.

Third, if a fire happens and you cannot clearly put it out immediately, call the fire department for help -- and have their number and a cell phone handy on the range.
Fly 50,000 for our 50th Extended

For the last year, NAR members have been helping kids fly their first rocket as part of the NAR's 50th Birthday celebration and awarding NAR recognition certificates to those who do so.   You can read the details from the announcement to NAR members last year.  Members can also check results showing flights by NAR sections and individuals as we show kids today how much fun rocketry can be.  Congratulations to the Birmingham Rocket Boys NAR Section in Birmingham, AL for being the NAR section champions in this program's first year, assisting 1280 kids; and to Fred Shecter as the individual champion, assisting 813.  Great work!

This program reached 7800 young people in its first year, and has been so popular that we have decided to continue it for as long as it takes to reach 50,000.  Please encourage and assist young people in your community in flying their first rocket today.
