Greetings!

Welcome the first edition of the Electronic Rocketeer, our first step into digital media.  Below you'll find the latest information on the 6th Annual TARC finals, National Sport Launch, our 50th birthday party, and other NAR news.  And be sure to contact us with your ideas, suggestions and comments as we work to make sure we're communicating directly with YOU, the NAR member in the field.  We're looking forward to helping you stay in touch with all the NAR's service programs and activities throughout the year.

Pay forward.  Aim high.

Mark "Bunny" Bundick
NAR President
TARC 2008
This is the sixth year of the NAR's premier "pay forward" outreach event and the world's largest rocket contest, co-sponsored by the NAR and the Aerospace Industries Association.

Between 6,000 and 7,000 7th through 12th grade students participate through about 650 school or youth organization teams from every state each year, learning the skills and the enthusiasm for rocketry as a hobby and aerospace technologies as a career.  The TARC 2008 Finals are being held on May 17, 2008 at the same Great Meadow site as NARAM-50, run by a NAR range crew of over 100 volunteers.   NAR senior members nationwide can help by "mentoring" or assisting TARC student teams in learning how to do rocketry, find a flying site, etc.  If you would like to become a local TARC mentor, please contact the NAR's TARC Manager Trip Barber at ahbarber@alum.mit.edu.  If you'd like to help by recruiting local students and teachers or encouraging local schools to enter TARC, see the event website www.rocketcontest.org for more details.
NARAM-50 Don't Miss the NAR's 50th Birthday Party!
In celebration of our 50th birthday, we're planning the largest party with the best guests in Manassas, VA on July 26-27!  Don't miss out!!!
NARAM-50 is being held at Great Meadow Outdoor Center in The Plains, VA, 40 miles west of Washington DC from July 26 to August 1.  In addition to a great selection of competition events plus open sport flying up through J motors, this year's NARAM has many special events planned in connection with celebrating the 50th anniversary of our hobby, the NAR, and NARAM.  The biggest of these is an "Old Rocketeers' Reunion" reception and dinner on Saturday evening, July 26.  Vern and Gleda Estes will be there, along with Barbara Stine and dozens of other rocketeers from the early days of the NAR.  There will be photos, videos, and displays of memorabilia from the beginning of the hobby.  Every NAR member (or former NAR member, we are looking for our "alumni" to invite them back to the celebration) is welcome regardless of age or longevity in the NAR.  Details and registration for NARAM and ORR are available at www.naram.org/. Registration deadline is June 24.

Check out the Old Rocketeer's Reunion website for all the details on this celebration.
NAR Litigation Update
Many members are inquring about the status of our litigation in Federal court against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE).  While the last required legal document filings occured over a year ago on April 10, 2007, there have been no further hearings or actions since that date. Counsel continues to check with the court clerks regarding status, but has no updates for us at this time.

I know this is a frustrating process for members, but given the workload and staffing in Federal courts, particular in the D. C. District where our case is pending, results in these delays, and ours is not considered an exceptionally old case by that circuit's standards.  Any information I receive on the litigation I will immediately report in a special edition of "The Electronic Rocketeer".

I appreciate the support and patience of NAR members in this process, and as always, please feel free to contact me directly at president@nar.org.
Competition Rules Ballot Underway
NAR members should have received a printed ballot via mail for the 2007-2008 Contest Rule Revision proposals.  A complete version of these proposed revisions can be found online here.  If you did not receive a ballot, please contact Rules Revision Chairman Jim Filler via email.
Fly 50,000 for our 50th Numbers Growing!
NAR members are helping kids fly their first rocket as part of the NAR's 50th Birthday celebration.   You can read the details from my announcement to NAR members last year.  Members can also check results showing flights by NAR sections and individuals as we show kids today how much fun rocketry can be.

Please consider finding a young person in your community and assisting them in flying their first rocket today!
